The 1st RDD high school event was organized at RDD2019, and the number of high schools implementing RDD has gradually increased. The RDD High School Summit was the brainchild of Sakata Nishi High School students and was the first time that high school students involved in RDD gathered together.
In addition to Sakata Nishi High School, many students from Osaka Meisei High School, Kobe Kaisei Girls' School, and Kakogawa Minami High School participated in this summit. Those schools are RDD organizers. Also, various people attended, including students from nearby Sakata Higashi High School, local NANBYO patients, and alumni from Sakata Nishi High School.
After a serious discussion about the future of the local community related to NANBYO and RDD high school on the first day, they stayed overnight at Mt. Chokai, a famous mountain. They enjoyed fireworks, star gazing, hiking, etc. In addition, they experienced the nature and traditions of Shonai and strengthened bonds among fellow RDD organizers (the RDD Japan staffs were unable to participate due to other duties, except for the discussion. We are so jealous of them!).
We would like to thank Sakata Nishi High School for organizing this fantastic RDD High School Summit, which must have been challenging to plan and manage due to the effects of the pandemic. We are excited to see many high school students seriously discussing rare and intractable diseases. We hope that this will lead to their following action!
